You already know it: hot days make you thirstier. What’s less obvious is how much more you actually need, and why waiting for thirst can leave you behind it. The evidence says heat measurably raises your fluid needs, mainly through extra sweat, and the safest habit is drinking a little ahead of thirst once it’s genuinely hot, not just responding to it.

Why hot weather raises your water needs
Your body cools itself mainly by sweating, and the hotter it gets, the harder that system works. On a genuinely hot day, sweat losses climb well past a mild-climate baseline, sometimes by liters over a few hours outdoors.
Sports-medicine researchers who study this in athletes found something that applies just as well to an ordinary heat wave: in hot conditions, sweat losses often run ahead of what thirst alone prompts you to drink, a gap they call involuntary dehydration (Sawka & Montain, 2000). Your thirst reflex evolved for an average day, not a heat wave, so by the time it fires, you may already be short.

There’s no single milliliter figure that covers every hot day, and no serious source pretends otherwise. What the evidence actually gives you is a threshold and a pattern, not a fixed number.
The threshold comes from the American College of Sports Medicine’s position stand on fluid replacement: keep sweat losses from running past about 2% of body weight over the course of a day or a workout (Sawka et al., 2007). Cross that line and both comfort and performance suffer.
The pattern comes from a 2022 study in Science that measured water turnover directly, using doubly labeled water, in 5,604 people across 23 countries. Climate was one of the strongest levers on the result: people living in hotter, more humid places turned over meaningfully more water than people in cooler ones, on top of whatever their body size and activity level already explained (Yamada et al., 2022).

Should you drink ahead of thirst?
Mostly, no change is needed. Drinking when you’re thirsty covers the average day just fine, and the ACSM position stand endorses thirst-guided drinking as sufficient for most everyday and exercise conditions (Sawka et al., 2007).
Extreme heat is the exception. On the hottest days, or after a long stretch outside, drink a little ahead of thirst rather than waiting for it, since involuntary dehydration means the signal can lag the real loss. Pale, straw-colored urine is still the simplest daily check that you’re keeping up. Electrolytes rarely need a boost beyond your normal diet, except possibly in the first few days of adjusting to serious heat (Sawka & Montain, 2000).
