You’ve heard both takes: alcohol dehydrates you, so top up with extra water. Or, beer is basically water, so it hardly counts. Both are half right. Alcohol blunts a hormone your kidneys use to hold water, and the effect scales with the dose, but a beer and a shot can carry the same ethanol and land in very different places, because one arrives with hundreds of milliliters of water and the other doesn’t.

Does alcohol dehydrate you?

Yes, but not in the flat way the warning implies. Alcohol is a genuine diuretic: it raises how much water your kidneys pass into urine, on top of whatever you’d lose anyway. That part is well documented. What it doesn’t do is scale the same way for every drink. A standard 330 ml beer is mostly water, so the fluid already in the glass offsets a meaningful share of the diuresis it triggers. A 40 ml shot of spirits carries almost none of its own water, so its ethanol has nothing to offset it with. Same mechanism, very different net result.

The diuretic mechanism

The reason traces back to vasopressin (also called antidiuretic hormone), which normally tells your kidneys to reabsorb water rather than pass it into urine. Alcohol suppresses vasopressin release. With less of it circulating, your kidneys hold onto less water, and urine output climbs.

Eggleton quantified this back in 1942, establishing that alcohol’s diuretic action in humans scales with how much you drink. A 2010 trial by Hobson and Maughan sharpened the picture. Giving people a small dose of alcohol (a weak beer) raised urine output from 1121 ml to 1279 ml over the following hours, but only when they started the day already well hydrated. Give the same dose to someone who started dehydrated, and the gap nearly vanished: 174 ml versus 261 ml, not a significant difference.

Alcohol’s diuretic pull depends on your hydration state going in almost as much as on the drink itself.

Why strength matters

Ethanol is the same molecule whether it arrives in a beer or a shot glass. What differs is how much of it you’re getting relative to how much fluid comes along with it. Brim’s own drink catalog puts rough numbers on that gap: it models a beer at about 4 g of alcohol per 100 ml, wine at about 10 g, a cocktail at about 13 g, and a strong spirit at roughly 32 g, about eight times beer’s concentration packed into a much smaller pour (a 40 ml shot against a 330–500 ml can or glass). A beer’s own volume of water has room to offset a mild, dilute dose of ethanol. A shot has almost no water of its own to offset a dose nearly eight times as concentrated. Same hormone, same mechanism, very different arithmetic.

How to count alcohol toward hydration

Our honest answer: no published study hands you a negative hydration score for any drink. The trials above measure urine output in a lab, not a portable “how much water do I owe” number you can act on mid-evening.

Read the -300% literally and it says something specific: 100 ml of a strong spirit needs about 300 ml of water to bring your running total back to zero, a design choice Brim makes deliberately steep so a couple of shots don’t quietly vanish into your daily count. How much is too much?

There’s no single dose where the balance flips, because it depends on both the drink and the pattern. Hobson and Maughan’s finding is the clearest signal available: a single, moderate dose already produced measurably more urine than the placebo, in someone who started well hydrated. Stack several drinks, especially spirits with little water riding along, and that per-drink effect compounds faster than a beer night does. The practical read: match a stronger pour with more water alongside it, not because one drink flips a switch, but because the deficit adds up with every round.
