You’ve heard the warning: coffee is a diuretic, so every cup supposedly leaves you drier than before. The research says the opposite. For regular drinkers, coffee hydrates almost as well as water, and yes, it counts toward your daily fluid.

Where the “coffee dehydrates you” idea began
The myth is almost a century old. A small 1928 study noticed that caffeine raised urine output in a handful of people who rarely consumed it. Caffeine in isolation, barely a dozen participants, no actual coffee. That narrow result hardened into a blanket rule that outlived it by a hundred years.
Two details got lost on the way. A cup of coffee is mostly water, and that water counts. And daily drinkers respond to caffeine very differently from people who never touch it.
What caffeine actually does
Caffeine is a mild diuretic. At a high enough dose, it nudges your kidneys to pass more urine. But two things gate that effect, and most warnings skip both:
- Dose. Reviews of the evidence (Maughan & Griffin, 2003) put the threshold near 250–300 mg of caffeine in one sitting. That is about three cups of drip coffee at once. Below it, not much happens.
- Tolerance. Drink coffee daily and the diuretic effect fades within days. For most coffee drinkers it is minimal to absent.
At habitual intakes, caffeine is at most a weak diuretic and causes no net dehydration.
A 2015 meta-analysis (Zhang et al.) pooled the controlled studies and found the same: a minor, short-lived rise in urine output. Not a fluid deficit.
Why coffee still counts toward hydration
Here is what the myth skips: even when caffeine nudges urine output up, the cup delivers far more water than you lose. Your net fluid balance stays positive.
The cleanest test came in 2014. Killer and colleagues gave 50 habitual coffee drinkers four cups a day for three days, then the same volume of water, and measured everything: total body water, blood markers, urine markers. No meaningful difference. Coffee hydrated them just like water.
Researchers also rank drinks by how long they keep you hydrated, using the Beverage Hydration Index (BHI). Water is the 1.0 benchmark. A few drinks beat it - their protein and electrolytes hold fluid in your body longer.

How to count coffee toward hydration
So a tracker that scores coffee as zero is undercounting you. How much should a cup add, then? Our honest answer: a bit less than the lab number.
The studies above measure a full day of fluid balance in averaged, habitual drinkers. Your single cup is messier. Dose, tolerance and your own body all move the result, and plenty of people still want a glass of water after an espresso. That is why we built Brim to credit coffee below water on purpose: in our experience, real-world tracking should be more conservative than a lab average. A heavy-coffee day then nudges you toward one extra glass instead of leaving you short.

Milk gets the same logic in reverse. The lab index puts it around 150% of water; we cap it at 130%, because a glass also carries about 12 g of natural sugar along with the water. Cautious beats clever where the evidence is noisy.
How much coffee is too much?
There is a dose where caffeine wins the tug-of-war. It sits far above a normal day.
Where the balance tips
Far more than a normal cup or two
A clear diuretic effect only shows up at very large single doses: around 500 mg of caffeine at once, roughly five cups, and mainly in people not used to it.
Habitual drinkers barely register a diuretic effect at any normal dose.
For most people the ceiling that matters is not hydration anyway. It is sleep and jitters. Health agencies put about 400 mg of caffeine a day (roughly four cups) as a safe amount for healthy adults. Under that, dehydration is not on your list of worries.
Does decaf, espresso or cold brew change the answer?
Brew method changes the caffeine, not the verdict. Every one of these is mostly water, and every one counts.

Decaf is the easy case: 2–5 mg of caffeine means there is no diuretic question at all. A double espresso or a tall cold brew carries more caffeine, but you would need several back to back before the fluid maths turned against you.
