How much water should you drink a day? There is no single correct answer. Health bodies publish ranges, not a magic number, and no study ever proved the popular eight-glasses rule for everyone (a 2002 review found no evidence behind it). Your own target comes from your body weight, activity level and climate.

What do health bodies actually recommend?

Ask several health authorities how much water an adult needs and you get several different numbers. That is not sloppiness, it is honesty about a question with no single right answer.

The “drink eight glasses a day” rule was never one of those honest answers. It traces to a 1945 US recommendation, and a 2002 review by physiologist Heinz Valtin went looking for evidence behind the popular version of it and found none.

What actually replaced it are ranges. The European Food Safety Authority puts adult adequate intake at about 2.0 liters a day for women and 2.5 liters for men. The US Institute of Medicine, working from different evidence, lands higher.

Two respected bodies, working from different evidence, land on different ranges for the same healthy adult. That gap alone rules out a single magic figure, let alone eight glasses.

What actually changes your number?

So what decides where you land inside those ranges, or outside them? A handful of things, and none of them is how many glasses you counted yesterday.

  • Body size. More body mass means more water lost to ordinary metabolism, so a bigger body needs more.
  • Activity level. Exercise adds sweat and faster breathing on top of your baseline losses.
  • Climate. Heat raises sweat loss. Cold raises needs too, through drier air and heavier breathing.
  • Sex and reproductive state. Pregnancy and breastfeeding measurably raise fluid needs above baseline.

A 2022 Science study tracked water turnover in 5,604 people across 23 countries and found it varies by liters, not milliliters, driven by body size, activity, climate and pregnancy, not one number for everyone.

That is the clearest modern evidence that a flat target was always going to miss most of the people reading it.

Does food count toward that number?

Yes, and it is the detail most retellings of the ranges above quietly drop. The EFSA and IOM figures are total water: drinking water, other beverages and the water already inside food, combined. Some of your daily target arrives on a plate, not in a glass.

That means the number you actually need to drink is lower than the headline figure, not equal to it. A calculator or app that treats 2.5 liters as a plain-water target is quietly asking you to over-drink.
