Home/Compare/Plant Nanny Alternatives
Plant Nanny tracks water only and charges you to set your own daily goal. Tired of the plant? Waterllama is a better game. Want your drinks counted and the goal free? We make Brim, Premium for anything but water. On Android, only WaterMinder among these four runs at all.
The bottom line
Keep the plant if it still works for you. If you are leaving because of the game, or because it will not count your coffee, the right next app is a different one either way, and none of the four replaces Plant Nanny outright.
We make Brim, so read this page accordingly. Every claim is sourced, prices were checked on the dates shown, and where a rival is the better fit we say so. We also run price experiments, so the price you see in the app may differ from the one below.
How we picked
- We put Brim first because we make it. That is a placement, not a verdict: every app below, ours included, gets the same credit-and-cut treatment, and where a rival solves what you are actually leaving Plant Nanny for, its own entry says so, including the Android answer at the very bottom of this page.
- Every app here installs today without needing your Plant Nanny data, and every price mentioned was re-checked on the live US App Store or Google Play on the date at the bottom of this page.
- Most readers of this page are on Android, where Plant Nanny has more than 5 million Google Play installs. Three of the four apps below are iPhone-only, so we say which one actually works for an Android reader before we rank anything.
- Below Brim, we ranked the rest on what leaving Plant Nanny is actually about: whether you want to keep a game or lose it, whether your drinks get credited at all, and whether setting your own goal still costs you money.
- Apple caps the in-app purchase list it displays at ten items and ranks it by popularity, so an app missing a price here is not proof it does not exist.
- Every app gets both blocks: what it genuinely does well, and the honest cut. We publish this page, so ours gets that same treatment too, not an exemption for leading the list.
What Brim does not do
We are on this list, so here is our own cut, before you read ours.
If you are on Android, Brim is not an option at all: it is iPhone-only, full stop. Your real choices are staying on Plant Nanny, which already runs on Android with more than 5 million installs there, or switching to WaterMinder, which ships a real Android edition. Waterllama and Drink Water Reminder N Tracker on this page are iPhone-only too.
Brim has no Apple Watch app. Waterllama and Drink Water Reminder N Tracker both ship a native Watch app, free; Plant Nanny’s own Watch app can only remind you, not log.
Brim has no Apple Health integration, no backup, no restore and no export. A reinstall deletes your history today. Waterllama ships free iCloud backup and beats Brim outright on data safety.
Brim’s free tier logs water only, exactly like Waterllama’s. All 25 drinks and their percentages are visible free; logging anything else is Premium.
Brim is English-only and has two App Store ratings. Plant Nanny has more than 100,000, across a decade. We have no track record, no community and no support history yet.
Brim shows a paywall at the end of onboarding. You can dismiss it and stay on the free tier.
The apps
Every app below gets the same two blocks: what it genuinely does well, and the honest cut. Ours included.
Brim
SYRNIK LTD · we make this one
A quiet, glassy hydration tracker that publishes what every drink is worth and asks for no account.
Wins on: the plant is gone, the numbers are published, and setting your own goal is free, on the one platform Brim runs on.
What it does well
- All 25 drinks sit on a published hydration index, visible free, before you install: water 100%, americano 60%, milk 130%, spirits at −300%. Logging anything but water is Premium.
- The daily goal comes from weight, activity and climate (plus sex and pregnancy), and setting a custom goal is free, unlike Plant Nanny’s, which charges its subscription for exactly that.
- No account, no ads, and no ad SDK linked in the binary. Your hydration history lives only on your phone.
- A one-time unlock at $39.99 alongside the subscriptions, in a category where the loudest positive signal is gratitude for not having to subscribe at all.
The honest cut
- No Apple Watch, no iPad, no Android, no Apple Health, no backup and no export. English-only.
- The free tier logs water only. Coffee, tea, milk and alcohol are all visible in the picker and every one of them is Premium to log.
- Two App Store ratings. That is not a track record, and Brim only launched in June 2026.
- $39.99 is not the cheap one-time option here. Waterllama’s runs $8.99 to $19.99.
Get Brim if you are on iPhone, you are done with the plant entirely, and you want to see what a coffee is actually worth before you ever pay to log one.
Brim on the App Store →Waterllama
Llama Luna Apps Inc
A genuinely charming collection game built around drinking water, with more than 150,000 ratings at 4.9 stars.
Wins on: the better game, if a game is what keeps you drinking. A free Apple Watch app, free iCloud backup, and the highest rating in the category say the loop actually works.
What it does well
- 156,498 ratings at 4.87, the highest-rated app in the category, plus an Apple App Store Award and an Apple Design Award nomination.
- Free Apple Watch app, Apple Health sync and iCloud backup, none of it behind a paywall. Your history survives a reinstall, which nothing else on this page besides Waterllama can say.
- The same weight, activity and climate goal formula as Brim’s, free, with a free custom override, so you are never charged to set your own number the way Plant Nanny charges for it.
- The collection loop demonstrably changes behaviour. Its own five-star reviews credit it with years of a habit Plant Nanny’s plant never built for them.
The honest cut
- The free tier logs water only, the same limit as Brim’s and thinner than Drink Water Reminder N Tracker’s.
- Reviewers report that deleting or editing a logged entry requires Premium (5 stars, v1.92.6). We have not verified this in-app.
- It applies per-drink hydration maths but does not publish the values, so you still cannot see what a coffee is worth before you pay for it.
- iPhone and iPad only, and no Android edition. If you are leaving Plant Nanny’s Android app, Waterllama is not where you land.
Get Waterllama if you want to keep a collectible-character game, just one with a more generous free tier and no five-star review requests standing between you and your own history.
Waterllama on the App Store →Drink Water Reminder N Tracker
Phoenix Games LLP
An 11-year-old reminder app with the most generous free tier in the category: six drink types, a native Apple Watch app and Apple Health sync, all without paying.
Wins on: the most you can get for $0, and the only one of these four that credits your coffee without asking you to pay for it.
What it does well
- Six drink types, including coffee and tea, each credited at some fraction of water, all on the free tier, no subscription required.
- A native Apple Watch app and Apple Health sync, both free, plus a goal calculated from weight, sex and a hot/cold climate toggle, also free.
- 152,099 ratings at 4.50 over 11 years, a longer run than Plant Nanny’s own 2019 relaunch.
- No account. You open it and log, immediately, with no plant to keep alive first.
The honest cut
- Ads on the free tier, and the publisher’s own privacy policy confirms Google AdMob and the IDFA advertising identifier.
- The per-drink credit is undocumented, and reviewers report it silently under-counts what you actually logged: “if I add 7 oz of tea, it only subtracts 6 oz” (2 stars, v4.4).
- Reviewers report the History screen unlocks only after a prompt asking for a five-star App Store review (1 star, v6.1). We have not verified whether that prompt still ships.
- iPhone only, no Android edition, and the last functional update was September 2025. Watch it.
Get Drink Water Reminder N Tracker if free is your only real criterion and you want your coffee counted, your data in Apple Health, and your water on your wrist, all without paying anything.
Drink Water Reminder N Tracker on the App Store →WaterMinder
Funn Media, LLC
The 13-year incumbent, with a standalone Apple Watch app, Apple Health sync and editable per-drink coefficients.
Wins on: the Android edition. If you are leaving Plant Nanny on Android, or you log from an Apple Watch without your phone nearby, this is the one app on this page that works for you.
What it does well
- A real Android app, per the publisher’s own site, the only one of these four alternatives that runs anywhere besides iOS.
- A standalone Apple Watch app that logs without your phone nearby, the single most-requested platform feature in the whole category.
- Coefficients you can actually see and edit: a reviewer recites the app’s own numbers (“1 oz of coffee it’ll count it as 0.9 oz of water. 1 oz of sports drink counts as 1.2 oz of water,” 5 stars, v6.1.5), which is more transparency than Plant Nanny offers on any drink.
- Setting your own goal is free, unlike Plant Nanny’s, which gates it behind a subscription.
The honest cut
- Ads on the free tier, and multiple reviewers describe a first-launch subscription screen with no visible way to dismiss it (1 star, v7.2).
- A Solana reward token ($WMDR) and an “AI Gulp Detection” feature its own reviewers are hostile to.
- No lifetime unlock appears among the ten in-app purchases Apple displays on its listing. Apple caps that list at ten, so we cannot say none exists.
- It never publishes its coefficient table anywhere outside the app, so you still cannot compare drinks before you install.
Get WaterMinder if you are on Android, or you log from an Apple Watch without your phone nearby, and you want your coffee’s credit to be visible and editable, even if it is never published.
WaterMinder on the App Store →Where each app actually runs, and where your data goes
This is the table the rest of our comparison pages link to instead of reprinting: not just which devices an app installs on, but whether it writes to Apple Health, whether it backs up your history, and whether you can get that history out. It is also the table Brim loses on almost every row, which is exactly why it belongs on the page built to be honest about leaving Plant Nanny.
| App | Platforms | Apple Health | Backup / sync | Export |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plant Nanny | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch (reminders and a complication only, cannot log water), Apple Vision, and a separate Android app with 5M+ installs | Writes to Apple Health (confirmed); whether it reads anything back is unverified | Apple ID sign-in syncs some data across your own devices, but reviewers report losing years of plant history on a phone change anyway | None documented |
| Waterllama | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Apple Vision, an iMessage extension. No Android | Syncs water, caffeine and dietary energy; whether it reads data back is unverified | Free iCloud device backup, the only app on this page that has one | None documented |
| Drink Water Reminder N Tracker | iPhone, iPad, a native Apple Watch app. No Android confirmed | Writes to Apple Health (confirmed); reading back is unverified | None documented | None documented |
| Brim | iPhone only. No iPad, no Apple Watch, no Mac, no Android | None. Not read, not written, not built | None. A reinstall deletes your history today | None. No CSV, no share sheet, and no Apple Health path out either |
| WaterMinder | iPhone, iPad, a standalone Apple Watch app that logs without your phone nearby, and Android | Reads and writes profile data (confirmed); whether logged water volume syncs both ways is unverified | No account-based backup documented | None documented |
What users say
Quoted verbatim from public App Store reviews, with the star rating and the app version or review date. We over-sampled critical reviews deliberately, so these read harsher than any app’s overall average. Brim launched in June 2026: every written review so far is five stars, and there is no critical tail to over-sample yet.
“$70 a year is way out of my budget.”
“There’s a one time fee to unlock all features - THANK YOU DEVELOPERS!!!”
“if I add 7 oz of tea, it only subtracts 6 oz”
“1 oz of coffee it’ll count it as 0.9 oz of water. 1 oz of sports drink counts as 1.2 oz of water”
“It has a simple and intuitive UI that is easy to use. The reminders help me stay hydrated, and the streak feature keeps me motivated to drink enough water!”
Frequently asked
What is the best Plant Nanny alternative?
It depends on why you are leaving. Waterllama if you want another game, just a more generous one. Drink Water Reminder N Tracker if you want the most for nothing. Brim if you want the plant gone and your drinks counted, though only on iPhone. WaterMinder if you are on Android or you log from an Apple Watch.
Is there a Plant Nanny alternative for Android?
Brim does not exist on Android at all, and neither Waterllama nor Drink Water Reminder N Tracker ship an Android edition. Of the four apps on this page, only WaterMinder does. Plant Nanny itself already runs on Android, with more installs there than on iOS.
Does any Plant Nanny alternative track coffee or tea for free?
Drink Water Reminder N Tracker credits six drink types, coffee and tea included, entirely free. WaterMinder shows you its own coefficient and lets you edit it. Waterllama and Brim both require payment to log anything but water, though Brim publishes its numbers for free even to people who cannot log them yet.
Can I set my own daily goal without paying?
Yes, on every app on this page. Plant Nanny is the one that charges its subscription for a custom goal; Waterllama, Drink Water Reminder N Tracker, WaterMinder and Brim all let you set your own number free.
Is Plant Nanny’s 4.7-star rating trustworthy?
Reviewers have reported that a free in-game item was offered only in exchange for a five-star review (1 star, v4.12.8). We have not verified whether that prompt is still in the current build. Apple’s rating is cumulative and never resets, so old reviews keep counting toward today’s average.
Which app called Brim is this?
This page is about Water Reminder – Brim (App Store ID 6777476351, by SYRNIK LTD). A different iOS app is also called Brim (Brim – Smart Water Tracker, ID 6761324419). It is not this app.
