Mineral Water Comparison
Compare popular bottled mineral waters by magnesium, calcium and sodium, sortable, from each bottler’s published analysis.
What this table is (and isn’t) telling you
For everyday hydration, tap water and bottled mineral water do the same job. Every row below is essentially 100% water; what differs is dissolved mineral content, not how well it rehydrates you.
- Vichy Catalan’s sodium alone (1080 mg/L) is more than half an adult’s recommended daily sodium in a single liter, worth knowing if you’re watching salt intake.
- Contrex’s calcium (468 mg/L)covers a large share of a day’s calcium needs from one liter, more per liter than a glass of milk.
- Voss and Mountain Valley barely register. Voss’s magnesium (0.61 mg/L) sits closer to distilled water than to Gerolsteiner’s 108 mg/L.
Values are each bottler’s own published analysis and can vary slightly between batches. This is a reference table, not medical advice, see a doctor for personalized electrolyte guidance.

Stars show mineralization strength (total dissolved solids, or TDS), not a quality or health score: 1 star is very light, 5 is intensely mineralized. Therapeutic waters such as Essentuki score 5.
Rows tagged Therapeutic are medicinal mineral waters meant for short-term, doctor-guided use, not everyday drinking.
Brim tracks whatever water you drink toward your daily goal, tap or bottled, no need to log which brand.
Frequently asked
What does the mineralization rating mean?
It reflects total dissolved solids, a neutral measure of how mineral-rich a water is, not how healthy it is. One star is a very light water like Volvic; five stars is a therapeutic-grade water like Essentuki. It is a strength scale, not a recommendation, and for everyday hydration a light water works just as well.
Where do the numbers come from?
Each figure is from that bottler’s own published water analysis, in milligrams per liter. Where a value is not published (some brands do not report potassium, and a couple do not report a total mineralization figure), it is left blank rather than guessed. This is a reference table, not health advice.
Which bottled water has the most magnesium?
Among common brands, sparkling mineral waters like Apollinaris and Gerolsteiner sit near the top, above 100 mg of magnesium per liter, while most still waters like Evian, Volvic and Fiji are far lower. Sort the table by magnesium to see the full order.
Is mineral water better than tap water for hydration?
No, both hydrate you the same. Mineral water can add small amounts of magnesium or calcium, but for fluid replacement plain tap water is just as effective and far cheaper.
How much magnesium do I need a day?
Adult reference intakes land roughly in the 300 to 420 mg a day range depending on age and sex. A liter of a high-magnesium water can contribute a meaningful share, but most people meet their needs through food.
