You’ve probably heard the rule stated as fact: drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, no more, no less. It is not fact. The physiologist who went looking for the evidence behind it found none, and the number’s own origin story shows exactly where it went wrong. Your real need depends on your body, your activity and your climate, not a fixed count of glasses.

Where did “8 glasses a day” come from?
The trail leads back to 1945. The US Food and Nutrition Board recommended about 2 to 2.5 quarts of water a day, roughly 64 to 80 fluid ounces. Sixty-four ounces happens to equal eight 8-ounce glasses exactly, which is probably why the number stuck.
But the board’s own sentence didn’t stop there. It went on to say most of that quantity is already contained in prepared foods. Physiologist Heinz Valtin traced this history in a 2002 review, and found that decades of retelling had quietly dropped that second clause. A total-water estimate that already counted food turned into an instruction to drink eight more glasses on top of it.
Does the 8x8 rule have any science behind it?
Valtin didn’t just trace the myth’s history, he went looking for evidence that drinking eight glasses of plain water actually benefits healthy adults in temperate climates. He found none. Ordinary food and beverage intake, he concluded, already covers most people’s needs.
Five years later, the BMJ’s own Christmas-issue roundup of medical myths reached the same verdict independently, citing Valtin directly: no evidence supports the claim that you should drink six to eight glasses of water a day. Two independent reviews, decades of citations, and neither found a controlled trial behind the number everyone repeats.
What actually sets how much water you need?
A 2022 Science study tracked water turnover in 5,604 people across 23 countries and found it varies enormously with body size, activity, climate and even pregnancy, not a single fixed number for everyone.
That study, led by Yamada and an international consortium using doubly labeled water (the gold-standard tracer method), is the clearest modern rebuttal to a flat number. Two people of different sizes, activity levels or climates can have real daily needs that differ by liters, not milliliters.

No. The lesson isn’t “don’t bother,” it’s “the flat count was invented, not the underlying need.” The ranges above are total water, meaning food already supplies a real share of it, which is exactly the clause 1945’s original recommendation included and the popular version dropped.
