How many glasses of water a day should you drink? There’s no fixed number, because a glass isn’t a real unit: a small one holds about 200 ml, a large one 350 ml, so “8 glasses” could mean anywhere from 1.6 to 2.8 liters. Stop counting glasses. Calculate a real target instead.

The glass-size problem
Ask five people to picture “a glass of water” and you’ll get five different sizes. A juice glass, a standard drinking glass and a pint glass are all fairly called a glass, and none of them holds the same amount.
A glass has no standard size, so “drink eight glasses a day” can mean anywhere from about 1.6 to 2.8 liters, depending entirely on whose glass you use.

That’s not a rounding error. It’s the gap between under-drinking and over-drinking by more than a liter, while following the exact same instruction word for word. Restaurants, coffee shops and kitchen cupboards don’t agree on a size either, and neither do different countries: a UK “glass” and a US “cup” aren’t the same pour.
Switching to ounces doesn’t rescue it. The rule is usually quoted as eight 8-ounce glasses, but almost nobody’s everyday glass holds exactly 8 fluid ounces, and a US fluid ounce isn’t even the same volume as a UK one. The glass survives as a mental unit precisely because it feels concrete: you can picture one, while it quietly means something different in every kitchen. The count was never the real problem. “Glasses” is.
Stop counting, set a number
Health bodies dropped the glass count long ago. The eight-glasses instruction traces to a 1945 recommendation that got misread over decades of retelling (Valtin, 2002), and what replaced it are ranges in liters: EFSA and the US Institute of Medicine each publish an adult band rather than a single figure, and those totals already fold in the water from food and other drinks. Your own need shifts by liters, not milliliters, with body size, activity and climate too (Yamada et al., 2022). None of that survives translation into a fixed tally of glasses.
