Sugar in Drinks

See how much sugar is really in soda, juice and sports drinks, per your serving and in teaspoons. Some cans hit 8 teaspoons.

Grams are hard to picture, so this shows teaspoons too (about 4.2 g each). A regular can of cola runs about 9 teaspoons, and a sweetened coffee order can out-sugar a soda. Diet and zero-sugar drinks sit at 0 g on purpose, so the gap is easy to see. Pick a serving to compare drinks at the same volume.

Frequently asked

How much sugar is in a can of Coke?

A standard 330 ml can of regular cola carries roughly 35 g of sugar, about 8 teaspoons, which is close to or above a full day of the added-sugar allowance in a single drink.

How many teaspoons of sugar a day is okay?

The American Heart Association suggests keeping added sugar under about 6 teaspoons (25 g) a day for women and 9 teaspoons (36 g) for men. Naturally occurring sugar in whole fruit and plain milk is counted separately from added sugar.

Does the sugar in juice count?

Juice sugar is mostly natural rather than added, but your body still processes it as sugar, and juice lacks the fiber of whole fruit. Juice hydrates about like water, but the sugar rides along.

Where do these numbers come from?

Generic drinks come from Brim’s own beverage catalog; branded and standard items come from USDA FoodData Central (public domain) and manufacturer nutrition labels. Every value is stored per 100 ml, then scaled to whatever serving size you pick, and converted to teaspoons at about 4.2 g each.
