One study makes the case well. Armstrong and colleagues put nine trained men through a 42-hour protocol: dehydrate, exercise, rehydrate, measuring everything along the way, color included. What throws the color off?
Color is a proxy, not a direct measurement, and a handful of things can shift a single reading without your actual hydration changing at all.
- Riboflavin (vitamin B2). Any multivitamin or B-complex supplement containing it turns urine bright yellow regardless of how much water you have had. Don’t read a yellow result at face value if you take one.
- Some medications. A number of common drugs tint urine independent of fluid status.
- Beets and food dyes. Beetroot in particular can turn urine pink or red for a day, no hydration story attached.
- First thing in the morning. Urine concentrates overnight, so your first read of the day runs darker than the rest, even when you are perfectly hydrated.
None of that makes the chart useless, it just means one reading is a data point, not a verdict.
