Bottled mineral water gets marketed as the healthier choice: purer, richer in nutrients, safer than what comes out of the tap. For everyday hydration, that pitch mostly doesn’t hold up. Tap water and bottled mineral water fill you up exactly the same way. What actually differs, and it’s real, is a small dose of trace minerals, plus a sodium number worth watching in a few brands.

Is tap water actually safe to drink?

The "toxins in tap water" story sells a lot of bottled water, and the "bottled is purer" story sells the rest. Neither holds up as a blanket rule. In the US, UK, EU and most places with modern treatment plants, tap water is tested routinely and meets strict chemical and microbial standards, broadly the same standards many bottled waters are held to. Mineral water isn’t decontaminated tap water’s opposite. It’s usually just water from a different source, sometimes naturally carbonated, bottled with its trace minerals intact.

Do they hydrate you the same?

Once it’s in a glass, water is water. The clearest test comes from the trial that built the Beverage Hydration Index: 72 healthy men drank a liter of still water on one visit and a liter of one of thirteen other drinks, sparkling water included, then had their urine output tracked for four hours (Maughan et al., 2016). Sparkling water landed statistically even with still water, no different, no better. Nothing about a mineral water’s dissolved calcium or magnesium works like caffeine or alcohol to change how much your body keeps.

A liter of mineral water and a liter of tap water hydrate you the same amount; the only real difference is what else is dissolved in it.

Where mineral water actually differs

Where mineral water earns its name is composition, not hydration. US tap water averages roughly 30 mg/L of calcium, 9 mg/L of magnesium and 38 mg/L of sodium, per a nationally representative USDA sampling of household taps (Pehrsson et al.); harder-water supplies elsewhere can run higher. Some bottled mineral waters sit close to that same low range; others carry many times more of one mineral, straight from the bottler’s own published analysis:

Gerolsteiner and Contrex are the standouts: a liter of either supplies a meaningful slice of a day’s magnesium or calcium, well above a typical tap pour.

What one liter of two high-mineral bottled waters contributes toward adult daily reference intakes (EFSA, 2015, for magnesium and calcium; US IOM, 2011, for calcium; IOM, 2004, for sodium).

A liter of Gerolsteiner covers about a third of an adult’s daily magnesium and roughly the same share of calcium. Contrex leans harder into calcium, covering close to half a day’s need. Neither replaces food as a mineral source, but neither is a rounding error either.

When sodium is worth watching

Sodium is the one mineral where a bottled water can meaningfully move the needle, for better or worse. Vichy Catalan carries 1,080 mg of sodium per liter, more than two-thirds of the adult adequate intake of 1,500 mg a day (IOM, 2004). That’s a real number if you’re watching salt for blood pressure or a low-sodium diet, and worth checking the label for, whatever the source. It’s also, not coincidentally, in the same range as the sodium dose (about 1,265 mg/L) that lets oral rehydration solution hold onto fluid longer than plain water in hydration trials (Maughan et al., 2016); sodium is what makes that retention effect work at all (Shirreffs et al., 1996). Most mineral waters, and virtually all tap water, sit nowhere near that concentration.

Where mineral content is close to a wash, cost and access aren’t. In places with reliable supply, tap water costs a fraction of a cent per liter against a dollar or more for the bottled equivalent, no plastic and no supply chain involved. That’s not a knock on mineral water; some of it earns its place for taste or a genuine mineral boost. It’s just the plainest reason tap stays the default most days.
