How to tell it’s dehydration, not just tired
So how do you tell dehydration-driven tiredness from a plain bad night’s sleep? Look at what led up to it. Low intake since breakfast, a hot room, exercise, or alcohol the night before all point the same direction. So does thirst, and urine running darker than pale straw. Armstrong and colleagues also found headache symptoms rode along with the fatigue and low mood in their trial (Armstrong et al., 2012), so a dull headache alongside the tiredness is another clue, not a separate problem.
The clearest test is what happens when you drink. Dehydration-driven fatigue tends to ease within an hour or so of steady water intake. Fatigue from a bad night’s sleep or a heavy meal does not move nearly as fast.
